Another milestone in the 15-year-old history of the Gozo Association for the Deaf was the official opening of its centre in St Domenica Street, Victoria, last week.

The centre was inaugurated by Minister Giovanna Debono and blessed by Bishop Cauchi during a ceremony and reception hosted by GAD president Dr Eucharist Attard, as Mro Colin Attard and his son Jean Noel played classical music.

During his opening speech, Dr Attard recalled GAD's several achievements, such as the successful lobbying to increase the number of teachers for deaf children, the training of an audiology technician to repair hearing aids and make moulds, and the setting up of a well-equipped Audiology Clinic at the Gozo General Hospital to complement the services of the audiology technician.

The GAD was also instrumental in enrolling students for the Speech and Communication Therapy course when this was first made available at the University of Malta.

Dr Attard thanked members of the GAD committee and other voluntary workers for making the association's vision possible, giving special mention to Robin Wood who was in charge of the technical section. He also praised ecclesiastical and government departments for their continuous support, financially and otherwise.

Minister Debono and Bishop Cauchi expressed their satisfaction in seeing the GAD flourish through the hard work and dedication of the members and other voluntary workers.

The guests present were then shown around the centre and briefed on the services provided by the GAD.
