WVSD finishes second at East-West Classic

WILSON, N.C. — West Virginia School for the Deaf placed second out of three teams in the East-West Classic over the weekend, defeating Eastern North Carolina Deaf 64-11 and losing to North Carolina School for the Deaf, 63-18.

Against Eastern North Carolina, Mindy Spencer hit 14 field goals and finished with 30 points and seven assists. Holly Romanello added 17 points on eight field goals and made eight steals and seven assists. Carolyn Rockow finished with a double-double, scoring 13 points on five field goals and three foul shots and grabbing 13 rebounds. She also blocked eight shots.

West Virginia led 30-6 at halftime and outscored Eastern North Carolina 17-2 in the third quarter.

Against North Carolina, Spencer led with 15 points, hitting five field goals and three of her four free-throw attempts. Rockow led with 10 rebounds.

West Virginia fell behind 16-3 in the first quarter and could not catch up, trailing 30-10 at halftime and 54-18 after three quarters.

Spencer, Rockow and Romanello were named to the All-Tournament Team.

West Virginia School for the Deaf (4-10) hosts Maryland School for the Deaf Friday, 7 p.m.
