School Voucher Bill Filed For Session

From: KARK, AR - 02 Jan 2003

Story by The Associated Press

Legislation proposed for the upcoming session would give Arkansas, for the first time, a limited form of school vouchers.

The bill was filed by House member Jeremy Hutchinson, a Little Rock Republican. It would provide vouchers for disabled children to attend private schools.

Hutchinson said the legislation would help parents of blind and deaf students enroll their children at the Arkansas School for the Blind and the Arkansas School for the Deaf. Both are in Little Rock.

The bill would also allow parents to send disabled children to the public school of their choice. Even opponents of vouchers say they'd consider Hutchinson's bill, as it's limited to children with disabilities.

The legislative session starts January 13.
