NEW LEADERSHIP FOR THE GREATER LOS ANGELES COUNCIL ON DEAFNESS, INC.

Los Angeles- January 30, 2003: The Governing Board of Directors of the Greater Los Angeles Council on Deafness, Inc. (GLAD) is pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Patricia Hughes as the agency's new Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Hughes will assume her position as CEO of GLAD effective Monday, February 24th, 2003.

Dr. Hughes joins GLAD with a well-rounded career with work experience within government, the public and private non-profit sector and for-profit corporations, with most recent work as an Independent Contractor. Hughes’s extensive educational background includes; a Bachelor of Arts Degree in American Studies from Gallaudet University, Washington DC, a Master of Public Administration Degree from Seattle University, Washington, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree emphasizing on Organizational Development from the Union Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio.

For nearly four years a national search has been conducted and we are truly fortunate to have found Dr. Hughes. She brings a wealth of experience, which she can share with all of us in the greater Los Angeles deaf and hard of hearing community. She is a national leader; well qualified, highly talented and has connections to individuals and organizations serving the deaf and hard of hearing throughout the United States” said Herb Larson, President of the Governing Board of Directors.

Larson further added “The Board is also grateful to GLAD's interim CEO, Mrs. Sheri Farinha Mutti for successfully carrying out the goals and objectives of our organization and providing service to the community. Her leadership was extraordinary. We are indebted to her and we wish her well as she returns to Sacramento as CEO of NorCal Center on Deafness."

Currently in search of a home in CA, Hughes, born Deaf to Deaf parents, is happily married to her husband, Mike Culligan and is the proud mother of two children, Jake and Iris, all of whom are set to relocate from Kansas City this summer. In her leisure time, she enjoys spending quality time with her family.

As Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Patricia Hughes will work closely with the Board of Directors and staff to develop and administer a ten-county program providing social services to clients in accordance with GLAD’s stated purpose to provide interpreting service, advocacy, peer counseling/communication assistance, information/referral, job development/placement, and senior housing.

“I am thrilled and honored to be a part of the GLAD team and I look forward to becoming a part of the community” expresses Hughes.
