Deaf students to be provided free higher education

KARACHI: Sindh governor, Dr Ishratul Ebad has said that facility of free higher education will be provided to the deaf in the province.

He was speaking as chief guest at the award distribution ceremony held for deaf students passing BA exams at the DEWA College of Special Education at DEWA Academy on Saturday evening.

It was the first batch of 18 deaf students in South East Asia, which graduated from the University of Karachi. On the occasion, the governor announced a grant of Rs0.1 million for DEWA Academy and Rs10,000 each for graduating deaf student. He showed his delight that all students who appeared in this exam brought 100 per cent result.

The governor assured that efforts would be made to accommodate these students in jobs. He said that the implementation of prescribed quota for special people would be ensured. He urged the private sector to come forward and provide jobs to the special people.

The governor appreciated the work being done by DEWA Academy. He expressed the hope that philanthropists would pay more attention on the development of educational institutions for special children.

The Patron of the Academy, Syed Shujaat Hussain, announced to bear the expenses of three top position holders of graduates for their higher education in the USA. He said that he would try to send three such children for higher education abroad every year.

The Vice-Chancellor Karachi University, Dr Zafar Saeed Saify said that after attaining the distinction of providing graduation education to deaf children, the KU awaits them for higher education.

Earlier, Director Administration of the Academy presented the welcome address. After arrival at the academy, the governor took rounds of various sections and had a self-appraisal about various stages of education being imparted to special people. Later, the special boys and girls presented tabelues, which was largely attended by academy's patrons, parents and students.
