Subtitled versions of Lord of the Rings II - The Two Towers and Star Trek
Nemesis are available to cinemas NOW, but only in the new 'digital subtitle'
format. This means that less than 20 UK cinemas can screen them. They are
not available in an 'open subtitled/captioned' form - the format that every
UK cinema can screen (like Potter and Bond).

Please ask your nearest accessible cinema to screen them! (locations and
many more available films below).

As soon as cinemas schedules are announced for these films, they will be
listed on our website - please DON'T wait for the next weekly email - CHECK
the website often!

We are hoping that many more accessible cinemas and films will come in 2003

Subtitles @ Your Local Cinema can take NO responsibility for postponed or
cancelled shows. If cinemas inform us of changes, we will tell you (via the
website). Many cinemas schedules are "SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT
NOTIFICATION" and cinemas insist that they cannot be responsible for
incorrect information published on external websites. Sometimes a subtitled
film is not delivered to the cinema on time. The only way to be 100% sure is
to ALWAYS check with the ACTUAL cinema before you plan a visit

Happy New Year from the subtitles @ your local cinema team!

Exciting News!

If you are one of the millions of UK movie fans with less than perfect
hearing or vision, then 2003 could well be a very happy year for you.

In 2003, the Film Council and the cinema industry plan to work together to
create a network of around 75 accessible cinemas (there are currently less
than 20). If all goes to plan, these cinemas will be equipped with digital
subtitle and audio description facilities.

Many films these days are ONLY released with 'digital' subtitles, which
require a suitably equipped cinema. And audio description is ONLY available
on the digital system.

Locations have yet to be decided, but equipping 75 cinemas with these
facilities will eventually benefit millions of people who are deaf, hard of
hearing, blind or partially sighted.

The Film Council have offered £350,000 to make this happen and have invited
the UK cinema industry to 'match' the amount. This would double the amount
available.

Another £60,000 has been offered to film distributors - to enable smaller
distributors to add subtitles and audio description to their films. This
should ensure a wider choice of accessible films. Again, it is hoped that
film distributors will 'match' the funds - doubling the amount available.

In the words of the Film Council:

"At a time when cinema going in the UK is at a 30 year high, these proposals
are intended to help ensure that in the future the 15 per cent of people in
the UK who experience hearing or visual impairments are able to enjoy going
to the cinema as well as the rest of the population."

Tell us your views on accessible cinema!

Were you one of the 1,100 people that attended the free subtitled screening
of Monster's Inc in central London last October? Or one of the 5,000 that
attended the open air screening of the same film in Cambridge last summer?
Or maybe you were one of the thousands who experienced subtitled Harry
Potter last year (there were over 550 shows).

Please feel free to air your views. Maybe your experience of a subtitled
show, your disappointment because there were no shows in your area, your
views on equal access, or to be notified regularly of up coming shows. Just
reply to this email.

Studios and distributors obviously prefer the cheaper, digital solution to
subtitling, which creates a problem - there are not yet enough cinemas with
digital subtitle facilities to cater for the many people who now expect
major releases to be subtitled.

"It's like the industry inventing the DVD, but before they produce enough
DVD players to go around, they discontinue video releases. People want to
watch new films but can't - they're only available on DVD, but there is a
shortage of DVD players to play them on!"

So although subtitled, many blockbusters are still inaccessible to 95% of
hearing or visually impaired people in the UK. It is hoped that this problem
will be rectified this year.
