Who on earth would steal a little girl's hearing aid?

A HARROGATE mother is appealing on behalf of her daughter for the return of her hearing aid after it was stolen on Sunday.

The implant is worth GBP4,000 and is vital to Lucy, nine, who was born profoundly deaf. It was taken along with other possessions from a locker in the Hydro, which was left unattended for a few seconds while Lucy and her friends were swimming.

The hearing aid was in one of two bags taken also containing a blue GAP fleece, navy Nike tracksuit bottoms, an Adidas top and a white towel covered in swimming badges.

Lucy's mother Mrs Dawn Buxton said: "I have reported it to the police. We really need it back as Lucy has no hearing at all without it. I think someone may have dumped the hearing aid and if anybody walking a dog near the Hydro has seen it on the ground please could they return it to the police or give the paper a call." The Ear Trust Charity will fund the cost of a new hearing aid should the other not be found. A large amount of money for the support of deaf children comes from the charity and Mrs Buxton will now be organising more events in light of the extra expense for a replacement hearing aid.

"If the hearing aid is not returned the charity will have to incur the cost so I will do some additional fund raising like raffles things like that. Hopefully we will do some sponsored events to contribute to the GBP4000." If you have seen the hearing aid or have any further information which could help find it please contact the police or the Harrogate Advertiser on 01423 707513.
