Subtitles @ Your Local Cinema can take NO responsibility for postponed or
cancelled shows. If cinemas inform us of changes, we will tell you (via the
website). Many cinemas schedules are "SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT
NOTIFICATION" and cinemas insist that they cannot be responsible for
incorrect information published on external websites. Sometimes a subtitled
film is not delivered to the cinema on time. The only way to be 100% sure is
to ALWAYS check with the ACTUAL cinema before you plan a visit

Latest News: November 2002 - subtitled and audio described cinema.

Still no news on Lord of the Rings 2 - the film's UK distributors have had
many requests from organisations and individuals representing people with
sensoy impairments. Watch the website for news...

Cinema access facilities have been installed, on a trial basis, in FOURTEEN
UK cinemas, with more to come (locations on the website).

Many film distributors and subtitle/description companies are producing many
films that utilise these features.

Cinemas are screening accessible shows to a very appreciative public.

Organisations representing people with sensory impairments are creating
awareness and publicising shows.

Over the last few years, many, many people have been working to ensure that
disabled access problems are, wherever possible, eliminated from the cinema
industry before the year 2004, when the introduction of new laws will make
it more difficult for UK companies to discriminate against disabled people.

The Film Council (the lottery funded body created to promote the UK film
industry), are currently looking into this matter, exploring options (the
trial system is not the only digital subtitling solution available), and
plan to decide soon, whether or not to help fund the development of many
accessible cinemas in the UK, using money set aside for 'film related' good
causes - lottery money.

The Film Council are aware that there is overwhelming demand for accessible
cinema. Literally millions of people in the UK currently rely on subtitles
daily for TV, DVD and video - they EXPECT UK cinemas to follow suit.

Quote of the week:

"We have to broaden access to our industry to all sections of our society.
Not just for cultural reasons, but for straightforward commercial ones.
This is not altruism or political correctness; it's common sense..." (Alan,
Film Council)

Tell us your views on accessible cinema!

Were you one of the 1,100 people that attended the free subtitled screening
of Monster's Inc in central London last month? Or one of the 5,000 that
attended the open air screening of the same film in Cambridge? Or maybe you
were one of the thousands who experienced subtitled Harry Potter last year
(there were over 550 shows).

Please feel free to air your views. Maybe your experience of a subtitled
show, your disappointment because there were no shows in your area, your
views on equal access, or to be notified regularly of up coming shows. Just
reply to this email.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Don't forget the national online petition...

It's been going a few years now, but there are still a few people out there
who have yet to support the ongoing national petition for regular,
widespread, subtitled and audio described screenings. We would like every
person in the UK who would benefit from these screenings (there are
millions) to join the petition.

Please add your support on the website, or simply reply to this mail with
your message of support

Imagine for a moment being a deaf or hard of hearing person (maybe you are).
Wouldn't you be very upset when you realised you have missed your once in a
lifetime chance to experience these films in a form that you can enjoy?
Don't let that happen - spread the word - if you know of anyone who would
appreciate subtitled or audio described shows, please let them know. Inform
them of our information service website or forward this email to them if you
can.

If you know someone who would appreciate this service? Forward this mail to
them now!

Subtitled and audio described cinema enables people with less than perfect
hearing or vision to enjoy film, presented in it's original and best form -
the cinema.

We campaign for and publicise accessible screenings nationwide, increasing
audience figures for these shows, and reminding the cinema industry that
there are many people out there who will visit a cinema, when it is
accessible to them.

Please feel free to air your views. Maybe your experience of a subtitled
show, your disappointment because there were no shows in your area, your
views on equal access, or to be notified regularly of up coming shows. Just
