MOTION PICTURE ACCESS (MoPix) NEWS
Week of November 1 to November 7

NICK NEWS LOOKS AT ACCESS TO MOVIE THEATERS
Tune in alert... Sunday's episode (Nov. 3, 8:30 PM EST) of cable network Nickelodeon's NICK NEWS will feature access to movie theaters via captioning. Watch, learn and enjoy!

HUGE FILMS ON HUGE SCREENS
Among the films being released in IMAX theaters this fall are STAR WARS: ATTACK OF THE CLONES: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE (Lucasfilm, Ltd. and 20th Century Fox Film Corporation), THE LION KING and the new film TREASURE ISLAND (both from Buena Vista Pictures). The films will be shown with closed captions and descriptions in select MoPix-equipped large format theaters. TREASURE ISLAND will also play in conventional movie theaters. Stay tuned for additional information about locations and showtimes.

HARRY POTTER COUNTDOWN
Two weeks to go until HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS is released with closed captions and description in select MoPix-equipped theaters!

LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS
It's deja vu all over again. Last year's wait for word on the LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING is happening again this year. Still no word from New Line Cinema, distributor of the LORD OF THE RINGS film trilogy, on their decision whether to release the second film, LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS with closed captions and descriptive narration (last year it was a "no"). Here's the address and phone number in case you'd like to lend your support to the effort.

INSTALLATION UPDATES
Crown Theatres Block E 15 in downtown Minneapolis is now open. Two of the theater's auditoriums are equipped with Rear Window Captioning and DVS Theatrical. Congratulations to Minneapolis area consumers who advocated for these installations. Cheers as well to McCaffery Interests Inc., developer of Block E, and Crown Theatres, owners of the new multiplex, who were just awarded the 2002 Access Award by the Minneapolis Advisory Committee on People with Disabilities.

We will continue to update you as news warrants on these and other upcoming MoPix installations:
* 11 additional Famous Players sites in Canada
* AMC Theaters in Arlington, TX, Chicago, IL and Bay Street/Oakland, CA
* A second system at Mann's Chinese 6 in Hollywood, CA
* National Amusements latest installation in Worcester, MA

OUR NUMBER ONE QUESTION
What can I do to get closed captioned and described films closer to my home? We've assembled a list of headquarters of major theater chains-- let them know you're eager to see accessible films, eat their popcorn and be a regular customer. The link to the list of chains is

THE DIGITAL CINEMA QUESTION
What happens to Rear Window Captioning and DVS Theatrical when digital cinema becomes commonplace? Digital cinema promises to change the way films are delivered to theaters... the days when actual film prints (and the disks that accompany them with the caption and description data for RWC/DVST) are shipped to theaters will eventually end. However, once films with access features embedded are delivered to theaters electronically, how will captions be displayed (subtitling on the screen vs. a closed caption system)? How will descriptions be delivered to patrons with vision loss? Rear Window Captioning and DVS Theatrical are solutions to the closed/open display and delivery challenges that will still exist. The Media Access Group at WGBH is an active participant in the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers/SMPTE Digital Cinema Working Group, and is looking forward, as the film industry and movie fans are, to the evolution of digital cinema in the U.S. and abroad.
