MINOT - Minot State University has received a $1.1 million donation.

The gift comes from the estate of Elsie May Deeter, who graduated from the university in 1941.

The money will be put into an endowment fund. The interest, which totals about $50,000 each year, will be used to aid programs for teachers of the hearing impaired, said Dick Jenkins, vice president for advancement and student affairs.

Seven students graduated from Minot State last spring with degrees in deaf education.

“We will be eternally grateful to Ray and Elsie May Deeter for their generosity and vision to help others with special needs,” said MSU President Erick Shaar.

As a teacher, Deeter worked with the hearing-impaired in California. She continued her work even after retirement.
