MOTION PICTURE ACCESS (MoPix) NEWS

From: WGBH
Oct. 24, 2002

Week of October 25 to October 31

NICK NEWS LOOKS AT THEATER ACCESS VIA CAPTIONING
An upcoming episode of cable network Nickelodeon's NICK NEWS features captioning for movie theaters. Representatives from WGBH's Motion Picture Access program and from the Tripod Open Captioned Films program are interviewed, kids who use theater captioning talk about their experiences, and the RWC and open captioned options are shown. Special thanks to two very articulate Boston-area sisters (who shall remain anonymous until their national TV debut) for generously giving up precious time in math class (what devotion!) on a recent Monday to attend the theater "shoot" and share their views on Rear Window Captioning. Tune in to NICK NEWS (the program is regularly closed captioned by the Media Access Group/WGBH) on Nov. 3 at 8:30 pm EST. We hope to be able to announce a future segment devoted to descriptive narration for theaters and television as well.

THE LION KING, BIGGER THAN EVER
Buena Vista Films is re-releasing THE LION KING, this time in large-screen format for IMAX theaters. The film will be shown with closed captions and descriptions in select MoPix-equipped large format theaters beginning December 25. Stay tuned for a list of the theaters that will play this film, one of the biggest box office successes in Disney's history.

STILL NO WORD ON LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS
We haven't heard from New Line Cinema, distributor of the LORD OF THE RINGS film trilogy, on their decision whether to release this much-anticipated film with closed captions and descriptive narration. Here's the address and phone number in case you'd like to lend your support to the effort. Now's the time, this is likely the crucial week when the final decision will be made.

INSTALLATION UPDATES

Crown Theatres Block E 15, a new theater complex in downtown Minneapolis, will open to the public next week, Nov. 1. This week, Oct. 25 to 31, the theater is showing big hits from this past summer in celebration of the new multiplex, with proceeds of ticket sales going to area charities. We are working with the staff at Crown to arrange accessibility of some of these releases, which were captioned and described for their debut earlier this year. We will send a special issue of the update when film availability/accessibility has been confirmed.

National Amusements is moving forward on their next MoPix installation, this time in Worcester, Massachusetts. Plans are to have the equipment in and ready to go within the next several weeks. More when we know it.

We will continue to update you as news warrants on the upcoming MoPix installations at eleven additional Famous Players sites in Canada (scheduled to be up and running in time for the release of HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS on November 15), at AMC Theaters in Arlington, TX, Chicago, IL, Bay Street/Oakland, CA, and the installation of a second system at Mann's Chinese 6 in Hollywood, CA.

OUR NUMBER ONE QUESTION

What can I do to get closed captioned and described films closer to my home? We've assembled a list of headquarters of major theater chains-- let them know you're eager to see accessible films, eat their popcorn and be a regular customer. The link to the list of chains is
