A DEAF pensioner had her handbag stolen by a young thug as she waited for a lift in a block of flats in Reading.

The theft happened in Patriot Place at around 8am on Wednesday last week. The 87-year-old was left so shaken she was unable to give police a clear description of the attacker.

PC Frank Glover said: "This was a cowardly theft which has upset the victim greatly. "I would appeal for anyone who was in that area of Reading yesterday morning who may have seen a black offender wearing a hooded top with the hood up, to contact police immediately.

"The flats where the theft occurred are near the Kennet side, and it is possible the offender made their escape via this route. "Anyone who saw anything suspicious, or saw someone running away with the mauve handbag, is also asked to come forward."

Contact Reading Police on 0118 953 6000 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
