Bionic ear maker Cochlear said it had appointed Tommie Bergman as its new chairman. Mr Bergman takes over the role from David Penington, who has chaired Cochlear since it listed on the Australian stock exchange in December 1995 and is now retiring. Mr Bergman was appointed a non-executive director of Cochlear and deputy chairman in January this year. He is also deputy chairman of mining group WMC and a non-executive director of Smorgon Steel and Amcor. Mr Bergman, 57, also retired as chairman and chief executive of Asea Brown Boveri in January this year.
